I finally found a website with a listing of the off-campus May Term opportunities and didn't really see anything I liked (the selection seems heavily related to biology and conservation, which are interesting topics but not what I want to do in another country for a month). Then I clicked on "Turkey" and found this amazing traditional arts program that sounds like a perfect, blissful way to spend a month. Calligraphy! Marbling! Weaving! Dyeing! Individual work with a Turkish craftsperson! Writing! Then I scrolled down a bit further and saw the cost. It's a lot more than any of the other programs I read about...($2635 + $250 school enrollment fees + $100 visa + $800 for the flights). I could spend my life savings and still be very far from having enough.

Well, at least I had a couple of very exciting, happy minutes.

well, i'm on scholarships to be at earlham, and i don't think they'd do something special for this...it isn't the end of the world, though. i'm definitely going to be studying abroad for one semester of sophomore or junior year, so going to turkey for a month would basically be very, very delicious icing on a very scrumptious cake.

Aww darlin'. I had the same deal, except that I deluded myself for over two weeks into thinking I would somehow end up going on that trip, and even went to the orientation session, where we learned about the trip and the people who are going and the TURKISH FOOD and...yeah, $3700. Ouch. Even if my parents HAD $3700 I wouldn't ask them for that much. *cries*

Do they have any like...out of state opportunities? I know that sounds sort of lame, but other cities (especially outside the midwest) can be like new countries, and for a fraction of the cost! I am an advertisement for the USA!

(But I have a point somewhere in there before it sounded weird)

yeah, there are some options in the states that i'm going to look into. again, lots of biology...i could also do an on-campus may term that would cost virtually nothing. that's probably what i'll do. or i could go home and sell ice cream.
